Print Instructions in PDF

Below are detailed instructions for building your own horse:

Tools Needed:

Electric Drill
5/32 drill bit
Hammer
Phillips screwdriver bit
Staple gun (arrow GT21 Style)
Hot glue gun
Scissors

Materials Enclosed:

1 body with seat mounted
1 handle bar
4 angle blocks
4 legs with left and right marked on the bottom
2 rockers
5 cross pieces
24 1 ¼ screws
3 2" screws
10 3" screws
1 glue bottle
20 3/8 screw hole buttons
8 ½ screw hole buttons
1 piece poster board to mark location of cross pieces
Hair Jig
Skein yarn

Stain or Paint?

The first step is to decide whether you are going to stain it or paint it. Staining or painting should be done before you put the rocking horse together.

After the stain or paint has dried you are ready to assemble your rocking horse.

Angle Blocks

Glue the angle blocks to the marked spots on the body.
Attach with a 1 ¼ " screw per angle block in the large hole.
Repeat this process for all 4 angle blocks.

Handle Bar

Insert the handle bar in the hole.
Attach with a 2 inch screw

Legs

Next, you need to attach the legs.
You will notice that each leg as a letter code on the bottom.
RF = Right Front
RR = Right Rear
LF = Left Front
LR = Left Rear
Make sure all legs are in the appropriate place.
Don't put a rear leg in the front, or a front leg in the rear.
Take a 3 inch screw and run the screw in the top hole of the leg and into the top hole of the angle block.
Put all 4 legs on with just the top screw.

Rockers and crosspieces

After you assemble the legs, it's time to put the cross pieces on the 2 rockers.
Place the poster board on top of the rocker and mark where the cross pieces should go.
Attach a crosspiece onto both rockers with 1 ¼" screws (2 screws on each side). It's recommended to start in the center and repeat the procedure with the other pieces.
After you screwed the cross pieces to the rockers you can put 3/8" buttons on the crosspieces. To do this you put some glue on a scrap piece of wood or paper. Slide the buttons thru the glue so that the sides of the buttons are covered. When you dip them in the glue only the bottom of the button will be covered with glue. It's important that the sides are covered with glue.

Body to Rockers

Put the body on the crosspieces.
Drill holes from underneath thru the crosspieces into the center bottom of the front legs with a 5/32 drill bit, drilling the full depth of the bit.
Be careful not to bump the side of the rocker with the chuck.
Make sure you angle your bit with the leg.
Insert a 3" screw into each leg.
Turn the horse around and do the same with rear, EXCEPT only run the bit thru the crosspiece.
Note: If you bought a hardwood kit you do need to run the bit thru the crosspiece and about an inch into the leg)
Put a 2" screw in each rear leg.

Finishing Legs

Run your drill bit all the way thru the 2nd hole on the legs, being careful not to hit the leg with your chuck. Drill at slight upward angle.
Put 2nd 3" screw in.
Repeat this process for all 4 legs.
Note: Sometimes one rear leg might not reach a crosspiece. When that happens, pull a top screw out, re-drill the hole and put the screw back in.
Put ½" inch button in holes.

Mane

After assembling the wooden part of the horse, it's time to make the tail and mane for the horse.
First find the end of the yarn in the center of the skein.
Wrap the yarn around the short side of the hair jig 12 times.
Cut off all 12 strands.
Staple on the head beginning as close to the bottom back of neck as you can get.

You will need 3 rows of yarn on the head, one on each side and 1 in the center. Repeat this process till the mane is done to your satisfaction. After that go back and glue between the bundles.

Tail

For the tail you use the long side of the hair jig.
Wrap 2 bundles of 50.

Divide into 3 equal groups.

Attach one bundle to the back of the horse, then another bundle, till you have attached 3 bundles.

Save 1 strand of yarn to tie around the tail, approximately 1 inch from where it's attached.

Ears

After you put the yarn on the horse you can attach the ears.
Put hot glue where the ears go.
Lay the ear on the outline on the horse.
Staple the ear as shown on the picture.
Put hot glue on top of the staples.
Fold the ear on top of the glue.
